Walkers out, Wisteria Lane in

I knew there was a schedule change coming. It was inevitable, with the writer’s guild strike. It’s not going to start for months, and it’s certainly not written in stone. And yet, it hurt my feelings to see this on a gushy ABC press release touting plans for the new, post-strike New Year season:
SUNDAY (MAR)
7:00 p.m. “America’s Funniest Home Videos”
8:00 p.m. “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”
9:00 p.m. “Oprah’s Big Give”
10:00 p.m. “Desperate Housewives”
That’s right — after giving them a couple of our minutes every week for all this time, the network is now giving Desperate Housewives our timeslot. Of course, that’s because the wives’ timeslot has been turned over to Oprah, who will apparently use it for acts of generosity that do not require writers. Could she just Big Give us our show back?
There’s some small consolation in the fact that another Greg Berlanti series, Eli Stone, will be debuting in February, in the Thursday at 10 p.m. slot, so I suppose we can all go drown our sorrows in that. Then again, it’s a show about lawyers, and that will make us think of Kevin, and then we’ll get to wondering what our Walkers would be doing if they were still among us, and it will all just be too sad.
Of course, the unnatural Sunday schedule above doesn’t actually go into effect until March, and maybe, dare we hope, the strike will be settled before then and everybody will be back at work and this silly provisional schedule will get scrapped. Please? Pretty please? It’s all I want for Christmas.
In other news: Sarah Jane Morris is a homicidal maniac.
