Retcon Patrol 1-22: “Favorite Son” Part 2

Today we continue our look for inconsistent or comment-worthy moments in the Brothers & Sisters first season with a look at the second part of Episode 22. Read yesterday’s post for the first half, then hop right in here.
23:49
I do love watching Lawyer Kevin go to work here. As excruciating as his attempted threat at the Web muckraker was to watch, this smackdown is so much more satisfying.
24:46
Love the way the half-sister popping out of the woodwork gets worked in.
25:53
Angela Correa’s “Super Paper Airplanes” plays over Nora coming home and seeing sad-making little baby gifts and wrapping paper.
26:52
Why did Rebecca put the kettle on if she was just going to be leaving? Was she planning on burning the house down after her?
27:20
Is this odd bowl-like tea set something we’ve ever seen in Nora’s kitchen before? I just remember the big green cups and white cups.
27:42
Ick. I’ll pass on tea ceremonies that require me to share a cup with someone else. Especially some random girl, whose mom has warned me about her.
28:53
I wonder if anybody told Rebecca about the food fight?
29:04
You can tell by the look on Paige’s face that she knows “There’s something we need to tell the both of you” is parent code for bad, bad news.
29:30
Gotta love how totally delighted Cooper looks at the prospect of sleepovers at Dad’s apartment. Twice the homes to tear up!
30:25
“Did Daddy do something bad?” asks Cooper. And Sarah lies nicely.
30:54
Way to go, Paige, comparing notes with Gabe so you’d know when your parents are in trouble. Keep their feet to the fire, girl.
31:24
Cooper is so easy to buy. A trip to California Adventure and he’s down with the divorce, yo.
31:49
Cooper wants to follow Paige to her room, but I bet if they’d offered him ice cream, he would have stayed.
32:06
Julia’s parents are trying to get a flight out of Costa Rica. I think they lose some superiority points for not being there when the Walkers were. Your daughter’s pregnant on a nighttime TV drama, you gotta know there are going to be complications. Don’t be leaving the country.
32:52
Julia agrees with Tommy about not doing the transplant, and does it without apparent doubt or persuading or weakness. Would have made a stronger case for her later accusations if she’d at least seemed depressed or emotional or coerced. I wonder if the writers knew at this point what they’d be putting this couple through later. In retrospect, I think some of these scenes could have played differently.
33:15
We should all look as pretty as Sarah Jane Morris after a trying delivery and medical worries and no makeup on (well, as close to “no makeup on” as anybody ever gets in TV).
34:48
Hi, William. Hi, little fake-looking baby doll.
35:22
So touching of Tommy to assume that his dad is going to be in the same place William’s going.
36:11
Couldn’t figure out why Kitty was dithering so much about being at the hospital, but I guess that’s where she told Robert she was when she was really dealing with the blackmailer. Nice, lady. Use your near-death niece and nephew as a cover story when lying to your sorta-fiance.
37:58
Is it just me, or is that ring box abnormally large? Like the box for the watch Chad gave Kevin. Oh, well. At least the ring’s not in a martini this time.
38:40
Melanie Doane’s “Good Gifts” plays as we see Uncle Saul on the other side of the cellphone from where Kitty just had her big happy marriage-proposal moment dampened by the news about Baby William. Leading into the “Bad News By Cellphone” montage.
40:49
“Death is part of life.” Thanks for those comforting words of wisdom, Uncle Saul. Has he been conferring with Joe and Sarah’s therapist?
41:21
And look! It’s another fake rubber baby child!
42:33
It’s the old “entire family behind the glass looking at the baby” shot. Gotta have one every time a baby’s born. Even Rebecca’s there!
This concludes our look at Episode 22. Coming up next for Retcon Patrol: the fabulous finale, “Matriarchy.” Everybody into the pool!
