Retcon Patrol: 1-05 “Date Night” Part 4

Today we continue our look for inconsistent or comment-worthy moments in the Brothers & Sisters first season with a look at the fourth part of Episode 5. Read Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 if you need to catch up, then dive right in here with Part 4.
22:39
This always seemed bogus to me. I can understand the waiter knowing Warren’s drink, since that sleaze is probably in there with women all the time, but would he really remember Kitty’s? Maybe she stuck in his mind because she’s older than Warren’s usual conquests, and had a more grown-up drink order? But for sure, he just torpedoed his tip.
23:17
Honestly, if Amber had any brains? She’d ditch Warren immediately and go for the cute rich guy who orders expensive champagne and behaves thoughtfully toward her. He’s going to be needing a new girlfriend pretty soon anyway.
24:18
Didn’t they already use the “young and oblivious kid invites oldsters to hip bar” thing with Justin and his siblings? Maybe Amber should hook up with him.
24:44
And as awkward as dinner with the boyfriend and the girlfriend and the fling and the twit was, it’s nothing compared to the contractor and the widow and the brother and the mistress. Man, these people should flatly not be allowed to date.
25:52
Holly wishes she could rent old movies of Saul, ’cause he’s such an enigma. The ones co-starring Milo would be particularly illuminating.
26:21
Now Saul moves to talking about secrets William only shared with Holly, and the music of suspense and intrigue rises up. So is he pretending to date her to get info, or pretending to date her to deny to himself that he’s gay, or pretending to date her because they are two loose-end characters and you might as well tie them together? I don’t think we ever got a satisfactory answer to that.
26:56
Scotty says he was “so gay, so quickly, there was no use in arguing with anybody about it.” Though from what we’ve seen of his mother, it’s hard to believe she didn’t try.
27:04
Kevin says he didn’t come into this world loving clothes or musical theater. But he picked it up somewhere along the line, if his mission to get every member of his family to see Wicked is any indication.
27:10
Kevin outing lore: “I was keeping it all pretty much to myself until senior year, when I hooked up with this guy, Danny MacCollough, in his attic. … Danny’s older sister, Abigail, was best friends with Kitty. And that Halloween, Danny decided to dress up as a French chambermaid. Abigail, no fool, figures things out. She and Danny have a heart-to-heart. Of course Danny tells her everything. Abigail tells Kitty. Kitty, bom-bom-bom, confronts me. … I couldn’t very well deny it. I made her swear a vow of secrecy. But by Christmas, she told all my brothers and sisters. … When I finally told Mom, she immediately joined Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. I became her cause celebre. I was an exchange student in my own home.” Which suggests two questions: Where did Tucker Booth fall in this timeline? And how on earth did Kitty manage to wait from Halloween until Christmas?
28:02
Amos Lee’s “Colors” scores the Meaningful Looks Across Dinner Tables montage. Ending with Scotty’s line, “I love this part. When you look at someone and they don’t look away.”
28:40
He presumably doesn’t love the part where you kiss someone and then they coolly ask for the chutney like nothing happened. But this dinner didn’t have nearly enough awkward. (Actually, Kevin’s line reminded me of Scotty asking for the mango peach salsa at another awkward dinner. What’s with all the condiments?)
29:14
Nora and Saul meet on the Stairs That Time Forgot and turn into bickering little kids. I’m extremely embarrassed for the both of them, but it does nicely reinforce the point that there are more than one set of siblings at the center of things here.
29:59
It’s at moments like this one, when Nora is in the process of completely humiliating herself in front of David on the question of whether this is a date or not, that I usually hit the mute button. Please appreciate that I am sitting through this painful dialog on your behalf.
30:50
Now see, people? This is where having a druggie brother comes in handy, because you can use him to practice injections. Justin’s many unexpected talents continue to show themselves.
31:38
Justin childhood trivia: Kitty dressed him up in Mom’s clothes, and Sarah painted his toenails. And they wonder why the kid’s screwed up.
To be continued.

“Scotty says he was “so gay, so quickly, there was no use in arguing with anybody about it.â€? Though from what we’ve seen of his mother, it’s hard to believe she didn’t try.”

I thinks she tried very hard, it was just “no use”

“Kevin outing lore: “I was keeping it all pretty much to myself until senior year,…”
****
And it never dawned on anyone when he wanted to wear Nora’s nightgown (the one that looked like a weddingdress) even more than Kitty did?

I think he lost his virginity to Tucker Booth, but it was never a ‘relationship’, just a ‘once only’-thing, he got CAUGHT because he hooked up with Danny. If Abigail had not figured it out about Danny, than Kitty wouldn’t have known about Kevin. And yes, I still don’t believe that she didn’t blurt it out to everyone.

“What’s with all the condiments?”

At another site we discussed that Scotty is the only one we see Kevin eat with.
For all their talking about food (Ice-cream vs sorbet, leftovers from nora’s party, breakfast at whatever’s etc.) we never actually SEE Kevin/Chad eat. Not even when they have dinner at the restaurant. In that scene the food is not served yet, only the drinks.
With Jason it’s the same, his first meeting with Jason goes sour and they never get to eating anything. Though Jason and he organised McKitty’s engagement party, we don’t see them eating together, only drink.
Same as Kitty’s birthdayparty where they get the news about Justin.
With Scotty there’s the poolparty, the date-dinner, eating ice-cream together, dinner at the Ojai-ranch, dinner at San Estephe, (the sandwiches Scotty leaves Kevin at the end of ‘36 hours’, though they don’t really count.), mmmthe lobster.

Date Night is still one of my favorite episodes. It has character development and back story. The Kevin/Scotty storyline is very interesting and cute.
Nice observation about food and Kevin/Scotty. I’ll add a couple. When Kevin eats the red velvet cupcake is when I think he fell in love with Scotty. Also, right before Kevin’s proposal, Scotty has a beer and takes a swig then hands it to Kevin.
