Five questions: “Sexual Politics”
In advance of a full recap, here are five questions from last night’s episode that are tickling my brain this morning.
1. What’s with Kitty and this “it’s so hard to find a guy” business? Seems she’s already had two pretty fine specimens so far this season, and now here’s Rob Lowe with those dimples and that charmingly written and delivered dialog. I think there are a lot of single women who would have been pretty happy with that much selection. Yet Kitty’s using a matchmaker? Surely she had some old photo of Jonathan she could have slapped on her desk for the gossipy co-workers.
2. Is there some sort of budget constraint that keeps all the regulars from being in any particular episode? We finally get Julia back (although in a pretty thankless plotline) but no sign of Justin, Saul or Holly. At least they got name-checked, which is more than Julia got in “Light the Lights,” but still. Perhaps the fears of some fans that having Lowe around is going to cost other actors screen time is well-founded.
3. Where do I recognize that scary matchmaker lady from? I think I remember Caroline Aaron most from Crimes and Misdemeanors and other long-ago Woody Allen films, but if you check out her IMDB profile, she has enough guest appearances to qualify as a “Hey, It’s That Gal.” Read the bio — she has a pretty interesting family story herself.
4. Was it a slow news day in L.A.? I’m finding it a little hard to believe that a senator having dinner with a staffer would rate that degree of paparazzi interest and newspaper play. Even with the divorce. Even with her being a minor TV celebrity. Even with her in that dress. What, every movie star on earth is out of town?
5. Doesn’t Roxy Olin look like her mom? That was the daughter of Ken Olin and Patricia Wettig playing Chad’s alleged girlfriend. Why on earth aren’t they using her to play Rebecca, the daughter of her mother’s character, Holly? If producer Olin is going to keep hiring his family, the least he can do is find them good parts. And this one? Does not look so promising.
