Five Questions: “Holy Matrimony!”

Five questions about last Sunday’s episode — “Holy Matrimony!” — still rattling around in my brain:
1. Who were those people sitting next to Saul in the front row? You can sort of see them there in the picture above. Kitty’s brothers were all sitting in the second and third row, along with Scotty and Lena, but there was a woman and a man in a tux up there in the front row on the bride’s side, next to the mother and the uncle of the bride. Have we ever seen these people before? Who could they possibly be that would have them appropriately seated in that row? Seems odd that, if they had to fill out the row, they wouldn’t have put recognizable family members there.
2. So what do we think about the dresses? First, the wedding dress: I got an e-mail from a reader asking me who designed it, and in case anybody else is curious, it appears to be by Monique Lhuillier. There’s an eBay page with what looks like the dress and a statement that it’s the same style Kitty wore. If that sash is really part of the dress, I applaud Kitty for leaving it off. Now, to the bridesmaid’s dress: The idea of having individual styles with a similar design, I love. The brownish color and contrasting trim, not so much. And while I’d hate to legislate similar hairdos, the fact that Sarah and Rebecca both went for updos made Julia’s hair look particularly limp and boring. And finally, the mother-of-the-bride dress: I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be Nora’s old wedding dress dyed and cut up. The waistline and skirt look the same, altered for length, though the top has been made so revealing you’d almost think Emily Craft was involved. Too bad they didn’t leave that little bow at the waist so we’d know for sure it started life as that bridal gown.
3. Was Robert’s son his best man? That was a pretty non-traditional wedding party, just his kids and his uncle up front with him to witness his vows (and by the way, did his kids really need to hear about Kitty holding his head while he slept?) Seems to me one of the best man’s jobs is to sign the wedding license, but I suppose Uncle Jack could have stepped up for that. They looked cute up there, anyway, although it’s kind of a bummer for Sarah and Rebecca — if you’re going to have to be a bridesmaid, there should at least be the possibility of getting a cute friend of the groom to walk up the aisle and dance with.
4. How long until Julia finds out about Tommy and Lena? It’s not like anybody was trying real hard to keep their voices down about it. There have been plentiful opportunities for Julia to overhear something incriminating — and now that Justin knows, the possibility of circumspection is pretty much nil. He was ready to tell on Joe when all Joe did was kiss Rebecca, and although there might be an argument made for protecting a member of his own family, the fact that it’s Tommy, who has been so freely judgmental of him, probably rubs that out. Unless Justin gets called back to Iraq, like, overnight, I think Tommy better consider himself busted.
5. Did Ken Olin really look that bad? There’ve been comments to that affect, but I don’t know — he still looked cute to me. A little seedy, maybe, as suited the character. The guy’s fiftysomething now instead of thirtysomething, and his drift out of acting to directing allows him to look like a normal aging individual instead of a matinee idol. I’m not wild over where this plotline looks like it’s going, but it’s nice to see him again on this side of the camera, looking like crap or no.

2. You didn’t tell us if you liked Kitty’s dress, Terri.
I thought it was very simple and pretty and that Calista looked gorgeous with the curls. Totally agree about the slightly different designs for the three bridesmaids and about the weird colour choice.
5. I have to admit that I’d never heard of Ken Olin prior to B&S (and Patricia Wettig has three Emmys? This cast is more impressive than I realised) so I don’t know how he looked as a matinee idol, but he certainly isn’t someone you could hoooonestly say ‘you look great!’ too - though they probably did make him look a bit sleazier than he normally does for the purposes of the character.

2. I actually liked her dress very much. I liked that it was simple and fairly modest, and not some dramatic cut-down-to-there thing. But I’m not sure it’s the sort of dress you would see on a hanger and say “Oh, my gosh, it’s the one!” Very sweet and pretty, though.
5. If “thirtysomething” ever comes out on DVD, you really must go back and catch it. In the meantime, the YouTube clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-UZetafHCo has a good look at Emmy-baiting Wettig (in the middle of a long cancer arc for her character), and a trimmer Olin, plus the always wonderful Timothy Busfield. Come to think of it, they should find him a guest-star shot on B&S.
